Building a Birdhouse for the House Finch
Building birdhouses in your background is one way to enjoy the beauty of nature and to help out these birds as well. If you have never tried building birdhouses and watching the different birds fly in, you just might be missing out on something great. Different birds may need different types of houses so you need to know what suits which.
The House Finch is a relatively easy bird to satisfy when it comes to birdhouses. House Finches will nest almost anywhere. In the cities, you would see House Finch nests on window ledges, crevices, holes in the wall, plant boxes, and hanging planters. There are even some stories wherein nests of House Finches have been said to be found in old shoes.
That doesn’t mean that you can just make do with any birdhouse or birdfeeder, though. The first thing that you need to do when building a birdhouse or feeder for a House Finch is to find the right materials. You can use coniferous wood – or any forest wood for that matter – to build your birdhouse. Get yourself some screws which are corrosion resistance to ensure a long lasting birdhouse for your House Finches. Once you have all the materials needed, you have to make some measurements.
In order to provide for easy access to within the birdhouse, you should also incorporate a hinged roof. The birds won’t really have much use for that – it is for you to clean the birdhouse and to put birdfeed in there. One last thing, do not forget the ventilation holes on the side of the birdhouse. The last thing that you would want is for the baby House Finches to suffocate in there.
