Is It Possible to Attract Birds to Your Garden If You Own a Dog?
A garden is always a great addition to any home. It can make one feel relaxed and worry-free while being surrounded by colorful flowers and green plants as well as chirping birds. A garden can even attract butterflies and birds that add to a wonderful natural environment.
If you enjoy gardening, you can also find a way to attract birds to your outdoor space. These flying animals are constantly on the lookout for food and a safe place to stay and live. Mother birds are normally particular about areas where they can rest and care for their young.
Apart from the beautiful sound they make, the presence of birds also benefit a home. Firstly, it helps keep the insects such as mosquitoes and other insects that can attack your plants at bay. Secondly, you can enjoy their presence to keep you calm and happy. Bird watching is a great past time as it lets you enjoy the sights of colorful birds of different sizes.
But what if you have a dog at home? Can you still attract birds to your garden? And how do you ensure that the birds stay and not be scared by your dog?
A basic step to attracting birds to your garden is by providing a bird feeder. This will provide them water and food as they’re moving around.
A feeder is available in different sizes and styles. There’s the hanging type or the tall and stand alone feeder. You can even put a bird house with a tall stand to let birds nest in your garden. These winged animals often move around so you just might attract them to live in your backyard.
The kind of birds you attract will also depend on the type of seeds you provide on your feeder. The inexpensive sunflower feeds normally attract many kinds of birds while finches prefer the thistle seed. Sparrows, robins and doves love to feed on the ground.
When it comes to dogs, though, there are breeds that can be easily trained to be friendly with birds. These include the large breeds such as the Beagle, Doberman, German Shepherd, the American Eskimo and other mixed breeds.
The case of dogs being friends with birds usually happens when they’re both indoors. Training is important if you want your canine pet not to take advantage of the feathered animal.
With the outdoor birds, it is still possible to attract them to your garden even with the presence of a dog. What you need to do is to teach your dog to stay every time he or she reaches for a bird flying by or feeding on the ground or on your feeder. Consistent training is vital to make your pet behave while birds are in the garden.
You can say “No” or “Stay” in a firm voice when you see your dog attempting to aggressively follow a bird. This will let him know that you don’t want the bird harmed. Do this as well when your pet starts to bark in the presence of birds.
